Beekeeping and the production of honey in Hadhramout dates back to the 10th century BC, when the honey trade ranked fourth in the economy of Hadhramout State. Hadhrami Honey is characterized by special qualities and international commercial reputation, make it the most expensive type of honey produced in the world.
The Honey Bee Center (HBC) was established by the University Rector Decree No. (56) on June 7, 2003. The establishment of HBC is an extension of Hadhramout history and its historical reputation for beekeeping and honey production.
The establishment of HBC is the University window to the community and an implementation of the University mission in education, scientific research, community service, and the development of its environment. Therefore, the University has laid the foundation for contributing to preserving the quality and reputation of Hadhrami Honey as well as solving the problems and obstacles facing beekeepers, based on the development and modernization of beekeeping methods in accordance with local conditions. The Center is a gift from Hadhramout University for beekeepers.
Since its establishment, the Center has gained wide range of reputation at the regional and Arab levels for its research achievements as well as the implementation of training programs and various services for beekeeping and beekeepers.
